When to replace injectors?

Some replace on mileage, others on performance.

If my car starts well, idles well, has good power/mileage/exhaust should I leave 'em alone.

Seems that as many people have problems with new/rebuilt nozzles as old, and I hear almost no catastrophic failures (tip blowing off) that would strand a car, ...

So who replaces them and for what reasons?

I replaced mine in my 83 300TD with a lot of mileage because (a) It smoked (b) the fuel efficiency was mower than anticipated (c) I knew nothing of car's previous history and (d) I wanted to do it. I had them rebuilt at a local diesel shop. Made a big difference in terms of mileage, going up from 19-20 up to 23-25.

Why mess with a good thing?

I think if you don't have any signs of the injectors being bad I would leave them alone. No reason to fix something that isn't broken.

I just had mine rebuilt, new car to me,and it had symptoms. 2 of the 6 werent spraying right.

Clean fuel filters and a good diesel Purge once in a while, and you really shouldn''t have to.

Talking Sleeping Dogs......

....let them be.....

Awhile back I phoned the closest certified Bosch FI calibration shop, asked if they would test my injectors if I brought them in....shop is about 150 miles from me....the shop owner told me....."use Standyne Performance Formula and save yourself some time and money"......he went on and told me of a couple of FI Calibration Shops that are a lot closer to me....

Here's a link... http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/ppt_dfa.asp

I phoned the closest shop that the Bosch folks recommended (used to be a certified Bosch shop)...and they told me the same thing regarding the Standyne products.....

I run a bottle of the Standyne Performance Formula through my system every 4-6 months.....also have used it in my tractor, a D-5, and a Yanmar excavator.....you would not believe the results.....wonderful!!!!

I have also used the LM Diesel Purge.....if you are worried about your FI system......try either of these products, and use them on a regular basis....

For those folks unfamiliar with the Standyne name, they are an OE manufacturer of Fuel Injection components......

I used LM Diesel Purge...

and, while it did improve the smoke production, the rebuilt injectors after ward are what really seemed to improve my mileage.

Tell you what. If you can be sure that it is not leaking or has bad spray pattern, leave it alone. Of course, you will never know till you take it out. Mine were running fine, or so I thought. checked them and 1 of them popped off at too low a pressure and had bad spray pattern. Other than that, the car seemed to run in good condition. I just did it at 120K for the hell of it. Wife noticed it was a little smoother and had more power. I noticed that I gained about 1 mpg.

Power Service is a bit cheaper, and you can purchase it at most auto parts houses and at discount stores like WalMart.......Standyne can only be purchased at Diesel shops and FI Calibration shops as far as I know.....

as far as chemical composition, I haven't a clue.......

Given how easy it was to get the injectors out and have them tested, I would do it again as one of the first things if I obtain another diesel. Also, when the injectors are out, it is the best way to check compression at the same time.
