Best Repair "GLUE" For Plastic Devices

I pulled apart my door today to find out why my door will not lock. Well, the door handle connects into a plastic piece that pushes the door lock up and down when locking/unlocking the door. It is a thin piece, but I do have both sides and it made a clean break.

I can not find anywhere around here (even the junkyards) that have the locking mechanism I need. Dealer wants over 218 for it - yea right.

So, would a epoxy or jb weld type adhesive repair this, and hold up to locking and unlocking a door every day?

Does anyone have a best suggestion for a brand or type of adhesive that would stand up to the above situation??

Thanks!

JB Weld plastic?

Will JB Weld repair plastic? I thought it was only for metal. I've used it on aluminum on my air cleaner mounting with great results. If it works on plastic that might be the solution to my climate control switches mounting bracket problem.

I've used it a lot plastic-to-plastic, plastic-to-metal, metal-to-metal...with excellent results.

On my VW pickup door handles there's a pot metal piece that wears. No longer available so I used JB weld and laminated a thin piece of sheet metal on top.
Works perfect.
Make sure you get the surface perfectly clean. Might even rough it up a bit to give the glue something to "key" into.

JB weld makes a plastic 2-part epoxy kit as well. Works wounders.

Also good stuff is the steel and plastic 2-part putty stuff.

Another great trick...for stripped out screw holes in plastic parts...a little epoxy dripped down the stripped hole and then drill & re-tap the hole...that trick worked wounders for fixing the un-replacable center console in my Fiero.

plastic repair

One thing I have done, is to use an old wood burning kit and some left over plastic that matches the parts to be joined, to weld the two pieces together from the broken stock part. Used part of an old seat switch housing to "weld" a broken bit off the replacement switch. They "weld" the flexible plastic bumper covers on cars, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Regards

A couple of products I've used for plastic repairs are something called "Plasti-Pair", a two part product(bottle of white powder and a clear activator liquid, stinks to holy hell but it works.) I've also used plumbers pvc glue for some PVC plastic repairs. You know that slippery kind of plastic that even crazy glue won't stick to.

I used Marine Tex to fix the console mounts in my 67 Chevelle, and a glove box door in my truck. Great stuff. Heck you could lay a piece of metal down and make a sandwich, guaranteed to survive a near by nuclear strike.

You'll find it at a boat store. Its a 2 part. Best there is.

Ok, I grabbed some JB weld (just the standard original stuff). Looking at the package, it lists a bunch of things it will adhere to (metal, copper, and so on). Nowhere does it say plastic.

Will this work ok for these plastic pieces I am trying to put together? Or should I return it and buy something else?

Thanks!

You bought the wrong stuff. JB makes a "plastic" kit too. You got the "metal" kit. It would probably work ok but best to use the JB kit for plastics.

Only stuff I could find was the original. None of the other "types" are at any stores I have gone to (ace, lowes, home depot, wal mart, target)

I'm like 99.9% sure they have a plastic kit. I got so many assorted epoxies, glues, sprays, etc in my garage I can't keep track. But I'm positive I have two different JB fomulas....

let me google it real quick.....

http://jbweld.net/products/index.php

Guess I was wrong...not a specific plastic product. But the original says it's for PVC & ABS, which are plastics...
