Fuel Preheater 606.910
Folks,
Can you describe to me how this works? Its has an electrical connection. Assume it uses engine head heat as it plugs into the cyl head. I'm just trying to identify why the engine fires right up stone cold, runs smooth for 30 seconds, and then starts to chug-alug and smoke. Replacing the pre glow wiring which is shot ( although the engine fires right up, so far at 32 degrees outside), but the easy smooth start and deteriioration into a smoky choppy thing has got me stumped. Fuel isnt warming up until the engine does maybe? The preheater connector, I beleive, is part of the same fubar'd harness I'm replacing. So far, I;ve adjusted my start up procedure to simply let it idle for 10-15 minutes. Trying to run it at 2500 rpm to get it warm sends up a blue cloud that a civil war battlefield would be proud of. At idle, it doesnt smoke too bad. |

The pre-heater does what you described.
Have you checked the lenght of your glow after start-up? Sounds like your GP's may beturning off about the time your problems begin.

No Terry, I havent. Replacing the shot wiring is step one. Thought they glowed only for as long as the dash light says on. ?? Had no idea they kept on for a while.
Ha, sometimes I think I'm slowly going for the inevitable glow plug pull. Not until winter. But wiring first. Wish the factory CD was in ANY way helpful about checking amperage through the wires, etc. Its not at all. |

The plugs have power after the lamp shuts off. That tells you that they're hot enough to start, not that they've shut down.
The plugs do shut off after a delay (I forget how long), or once you hit 2500 RPM. |
