If you plan to use Mobil 1, then I'd think you would want to use the 5 W 40 turbo diesel truck oil.

If it is ci4 rated it is fine.

You could use a dino oil with the same rating as yours doesnt have FSS.

I think M1 truck and turbodiesel has that rating.

Here's a list of 228.3, 228.5, 229.1, 229.3, and 229.5 spec oils for your consideration. I use Mobil 1 0W40 in my 1996 E300.

That info should be in your owners manual. If you dont have one order it from MBUSA.com

I used to use M1 European 0W/40 in my '99 until all the M1 labels were all changed last year. I "think" that oil is now called "truck and turbo diesel"?

The important part is the ci4 rating and a viscosity that fits the climate where you reside.

FWIW, that's what the M1 web site recommends for your car:

http://www.mobil1.com/usa-english/motoroil/car_care/which_oil/WhichOilManualResults.aspx?option=2

The 5W40 meets the 228.5 benz spec.

For a diesel, best oil to use is diesel rated, Delo 400 and Delvac are excellent value, if you have extra money to spend and plan to drive in extreme condition, Delvac-1 makes the best bet.

We have flat tappet cam followers in these engines, yes? Hydraulic style in my 606 and solid flat tappets in older engines, yes?

Not only is the diesel/fleet oil proper, but it also provides some of the special lubricants that flat tappet camshafts really need. Recall that most cars on the road today use roller tappets, hence dont have the load bearing on the cams.

I use diesel /fleet oil ion my solid cammed 427 big block Chevy. With a few ozs of GM EOS in the mix for more protection on the cam ( its a 7400 rpm big block, so the vavle springs are a bit heavy).

I use the exact same mix in my new Benz. Diesel/fleet, pick your brand, Delo, Rotella, Pennzoil , etc.

Have not used synth in the old Chevy as it has a few oil leaks, and synth defintely makes them worse. However, the 222K mile Benz is spotless, so I might go to a synth fleet mix next change.

The owner's manual doesn't have any specific recommendations, other than to use only oils "recommended by us" and to inquire at your "authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer" about the recommended oils or something to that effect. In other words, this engine doesn't have any strict oil requirements. The 5W40 Mobil1 Turbodiesel Truck oil (same as Delvac1) is an excellent choice. Currently I use Red Line 15W40, but I may switch to Delvac1 depending on the results of my next oil analysis. Just make sure to use a diesel-rated oil (API CF at the very minimum) and preferably a 40-weight (xW-40).

IIRC, it tells you the MB spec which you then have to go out and find. Mine is 229.5 for the '99; his is something older.

Funny thing, that site recomends M1 0W-30 for my '85 300D????

Like I said the owner's manual for the '96 model (which I have too) lists no specific oil requirements.

From http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html
"MBUSA recommends only the use of MB approved synthetic motor oil for all vehicles equipped with the Flexible Service System (FSS) as of Model Year 1998."

I noticed that too. That would be a very inappropriate oil choice.

What about the filters should I use the OEM one from the dealer or MAN BOSCH...etc. Is there any way you can point me to a site that sell bulk for a lower price. How about Fleece filters are they available for this engine?
Thanks

Wow, that's not right. This site did that in the past, but I thought they had corrected it.
