lots of parts will need to come off the 80 to make it work, but it can be done. easier if you have both cars side by side too.

It is the same engine, although there will be a few differences in "bolt-on" parts such as the motor mount arms.

The upper oil pan from the 617.950 in the W116 is different than the 617.952 in the W126's. If you have the upper oil pan from the motor that is coming out of the W116 to go on the donor engine from the W126 then you should be fine. You may possibly need the engine mount arms as well. As long as you have both cars available for parts you should be golden.

What about a swap the other way???

Gentlemen,

Does the swap work the other way? I have an 83 300 D Turbo with a 617.952 that just blew up another motor. It sounds bad--and expensive. I know a guy who seems to think that the 617.950 from his 79 300 SD will work nicely.

What issues, like the top oil pan might come up, and what work arounds are involved?

Does the SD have an electric oil pressure gauge?

Thanks in advance for your expertise.
