w123 Wagon sagging rear (non-SLS)

Hi folks,

I have a bit of sag...

#

and

Where do I start? Springs? Diff mount?

Or will I just lower the front to match ;-) (out of curiosity.. is there springs from another model that will lower the car?)

Cheers
Steve

Don't know to be honest... it all looks stock under there plus theres an ABS unit where I think the pump/fluid bottle normally sits (behind passenger headlight, car is RHD )

There's very little experience of OE non-SLS TD's on this board. New springs might help, or possibly you could install air shocks.

not sure what is available in ireland, but you may want to try some US spec 126 springs in there, they have been reported to increase ride hight in 123's
you may need to retrofit some airbags in there.

Looks like the wheels are too big. They would be better on my w123 sedan.

Seriously, suspension sag can be from worn our springs and worn out rubber bushings.

It doesn't look that bad to me, not much different from where my SLS seems to sit. Maybe I'm running a little low in the rear also.

Funny you should mention the wheels... just bought these with a very to putting 14" wheels on the car...

I like the look of the wheels you have now. What were they on originally?

Nice caps! Verify if you have SLS.

That car will look real sweet with steel rims and matching color wheel covers...very nice...the best look for these cars!

Regarding the sag...are you sure that this is non-SLS? It looks exactly as if you have a failed SLS control valve (easy to rebuild). If you have ABS where the SLS reservoir usually is, maybe the reservoir is in a different location. You need to verify if you actually have SLS. Look under the rear and see if you have a hydraulic line going from each shock to the air cells (cannon balls). And see if there is a lever attached to the middle of the torsion bar from an aluminum SLS valve (about the size of a deck of cards, but square). Also look at the front of the engine and see if you have a hydraulic pump attached to the front of the head...off center, on the driver side of the front of the head. If you have these things, you have SLS.

I won't be able to get to the car till Sat but will check those things... haven't noticed them under there so far (just recently changed one of the rear brake lines so prob would have noticed...)
Heres some engine bay pics :

and
http://www.mx5ireland.com/members/srigley/Merc/85estate/STA70329.JPG

and one underneath looking forwards, notice only 3 hardlines on the left..
http://www.mx5ireland.com/members/srigley/Merc/85estate/STA71139a.jpg

Does this confirm my suspicions of non-SLS-ness ?

rrgrassi : not sure... I suspect a w124 saloon tho...

Cheers!
Steve

You'd need a hydraulic pump on that engine if you had SLS. I don't see one on the head.
