240d w bad motor do i buy??

guy down the street has an 82 240d car has sat in yard for 2yrs. it has a /4 spd man. ac has been upgrades to 134a.

body is in fairly good shape better than my 300d that i currently drive.

his wife says it MUST go. heard her say it myself.

down side. we put a battery in it and tried to start it. it almost started then something seized, the timing chain broke and at the top of the cam gear and broke the valve cover in the process.

i'm guessing something in the over head cam/ head locked up. ? ?

is it worth anything?

what would be a reasonable price?

is it "Fixable"?

new motor?

new top half?

level of difficulty? special tools?

is it worth it?

i know a guy that has a 300 td motor in his garage on the floor. says he wants 75 for the motor.

is that some ting i could put in this car?

could i pull the turbo intake off and install a NA intake in it's place?

how hard is it to make it a turbo?

whiew! anything is doable. converting a 240manual to a 300td manual is a bit of work though. you would be better off with a parts car to pull things from. are you going to cannabalize your 300? if not, I would not want to start on it without another car to pull parts off of.
you will need to balance the flywheel, shorten the driveshaft, replace the Motor mount posts, and replace the exhaust system. you REALLY need a parts car to pull from.
plus, the TD motor may have a pump on it, if it came from a wagon (TD) that will not be hooked to anything... that will be a problem too.

shorten the drive shaft?? are saying pull the manual trany and put in an automatic?

can't i just take the turbo intake of and install one from an NA motor?

don't really want to make it a turbo unless it's a striaght forward deal.

The only parts that are not a direct swap are the transmission cross member, driveshaft and linkage. the 4 cyl engines are becoming rarer.

If you don't take it, I would like to buy it. I have a mechanically sound 240d 4s car with a crunched 1/4 panel.

Why make it a non-turbo? Keep the motor as it is. You'll enjoy the turbo engine for its extra hp over the na engine. If it has a pump, remove it, fabricate a blocking plate to cover the hole in its place.
All you might need for the exhaust system is the header pipe but I'm not 100% on going from 616 to 617 engines. I know I had to replace the header pipe going from CA to Fed manifold set-up on an 85 300D.
