Question 87 190d turbo head question...

Went to look at a 300sd, almost nothing worked, runs a little rough ,Cheap, then I spot a 87 190d turbo, also for sale, pass. door is dented and won't open, door sills should be good though, front windows,AC and front fan, and wiper don't work, runs gooood, needed jump but start right up, some light black smoke for a minute. Took for drive tranny shifts nice and firm, turbo spools up and accelerates quickly (I've owned 2 gas turbos before) excellent oil press, temp 90c, let it run and drove for about a hour but not on freeway. Anyhow the head # is 603 016 14 01 is the the "bad" head? Car has 170k miles no details on previous owner yet- he's selling for a friend.

A 190 with a 603 head?

The 190 has a 5 cylinder turbo engine for '87. Why does it have a 6 cylinder head?

Yes, its a 6 cylinder.

Can a 5 cyl cast iron turbo engine bolt in if needed?

That's a rare car. AFAIK MB never used a 6 cylinder diesel in the 190D.

You sure it's not an 87 300D?

Definately 190d

Evidently the PO had a 6 cyl turbo installed. No wonder the car was quick.

if it is a good motor, and a sound car, a 300 powered, 190D should be an AWESOME screamer!
