with the front and rear posts you will need something to support the window channels, (assuming you wanted to use the windows that is) so it looks like you need two roll bars, and that rear window slant is gonna be tricky... gonna look wierd sticking up behind the rear roll bar... hmmm.

Convertible from sedan

Guy from California did this about 3 years ago. Sorry not to have a link from the e-bay ad. He put some welded bars front to rear under the car and I believe one side-to-side cross bar with a hoop for the drive shaft. On the top, he cut about one or 2 inches back from the windshield and capped off the cavity for some windshield shake prevention. On the doors, he did the same and of course the door posts. At the rear, he cut the top at the base of the rear window and put a sheet metal (maybe from the top material ?) cap over the resulting cavity of the package shelf.
Covered the fake package shelf with the same stuff they put on the tops of hard top cars to make-believe convertible material. Think he had a killer sterio in the trunk, so he wanted to keep water out fer sure. Think he said something about truck bed Rhino liner as undercoating. He claimed the resulting convertible was structurally sound, with miminal cowl shake and all doors open/closed well. Only drove it on clear days and was much admired out there as to having the only 4 door vert that people had seen. Fooled a bunch of folks. Don't know about any top mechanism though. Would be the bee's knees if you could pull it off, but I'm sure it would really be labour intensive.

Regards

Run-Em

It certainly would be, but if it was done at a leisurely pace instead of trying to get it all done one weekend, it wouldn't be too bad. I have some friends with jeeps who do a lot of their own welding, so it's posible there might be some good fabrication help there.

The $49, 4dr convertable kit:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Cordless-Sawzall-With-MILWAUKEE-Blades-NIB-NR_W0QQitemZ200089523986QQcmdZViewItem

I may do this to a W126 before it goes to the crusher just to see it topless.

Why not? I mean if it is going to the crusher anyway....I will probably do it if I don't need to remove the drivetrain right away, seeing as the body is rusty anyway.

While your at it, shorten the body a bit, makes the proportions a bit better.
