rpm surging

Greetings! I have an 83 turbo diesel 330d. Last weekend I had a problem with it not starting, so I replaced the glowplugs and the 80 amp strip fuse (which was the problem). Now the cars rpm surges up 1000 when I take my foot off the gas and at various speeds. What is going on? It never did this before- very confusing. Any help is great appreciated. You all helped my a lot last weekend THANKS!

I cant think what the GPs or strip fuse would have too do with the surgeing. What is a 330d?

I assume we're talking about a 300D, have you checked all the "throttle" linkages to make sure you didn't disconnect/bend/bind/otherwise mess-up anything while you were working on the glow plugs?

Agree with Stevo, that will have nothing to do with idle. Also agree with Craig on the linkage deal. But, does the idle go up and down? Or just stay too high?

If the idle is surging up and down, you might check the rack damper bolt. It's on the rear of the injection pump on the bottom. You'll see it if you look between the oil filter housing and the IP. If it's silver colored you may need a new one. There is a new updated style one that is gold colored. You can adjust the rack damper bolt if you loosen the lock nut on it then back the bolt out of screw it in. Lots of info on here about the rack damper bolt (a.k.a. governor idle adjument pin).

I've dealt with a RD bolt problem, I would describe as a fluctuation, vs. a surge, only at idle tho, and not dramatic. If the surge happens other times too......I'm stalling for time!

I think you must actually own a 300E.

Anyone want to trade an old Volvo for an '87 300sdl?
