Question how much oil should a 5 cylinder non-turbo burn?

I have a 79 300td non turbo diesel wagon. How much oil on average should it burn between oil changes? It has around 250000 miles on it.Thanks-Daniel

0 in a perfect world. 1-2quarts per 3000miles would be acceptable to me. 3 would be pushing it and 4+ would be producing noticeable blue smoke out the exhaust.

Most of the lost oil is usually through external leakage onto the ground.

It's amazing how much less oil I "burn" after I replaced my oil pan gasket and filter housing gasket.

There will be no standard for an engine with miles. So much depends on frequency of oil changes, quality and viscosity of oil , length of average trips and usage to determine.. At a true 250k 1500 per quart would be nice and reasonable in my mind. . You could be higher or lower at that milage though.
I am not too happy at below a quart of oil per thousand unless there are leaks causing some of it. . I think there are original engines out there that may not add any oil at 250 k original accurate accumulated milage between changes,
