What is this? ('86 300SDL question)

This picture was taken somewhere in the engine compartment of a 1986 300SDL. Where is the oil coming from?

OK, I'm honest, it's on ebay and it's right around the block from my house.

That's looking through the oil fill hole in the valve cover.

On edit: I guess it shows that the engine top end is not gunked up with crap.
