Will a failing B-2 valve damage trans?

I am considering buying a 1982 300d with 200k on it. According to the owner, the car works perfectly fine in reverse, but has problems getting moving and up to speed. Once it does get moving, he says it's as if there are no problems. This seems to me like the B-2 valve is failing, or has already failed. This car is about 230 miles away. The town where it is located is 6 miles from the freeway, and my house is 3 traffic lights from the freeway. My question is- do you guys think I could drive it home without causing any damage? Thanks in advance!
