Belt Tensioner Spring Placement Help Needed
I had a cascade of failures on my 87 SDL. It appears it started with the belt tensioner spring breaking, which sliced my serpentine belt, the resulting constant whacking ended up pulling a fuel line out spraying half the engine compartment and leaving me momentarily stranded.
Anyway.... As I figure out how best to change the belt, I DON'T know where the other half of the spring goes. The upper portion (I presume) is still in place, but I don't know where the other end connects to. Anyone know of any online pics or can anyone post a pic? (PS anyone know what size socket the tensioner takes or is it a 3/8" socket drive? Clockwise or counterclockwise to loosen?) Thanks, Bill

Here's a shot of the 603.970. The 603.961 is similar:

Man that sucks! I had mine break and the spring hit bottom of hood. Was wondering what that thud was sitting at the toll booth, then belt started squeeling. After your story, makes me feel lucky! Its really easy to change, and the spring is like $12 from dealer. Use a pry to move tensioner enough to get spring on there. Might be good time to repl tensioner arm, and even the wheel, plus dampener. If you are so inclined. I did it all 1 at a time (but hey, I got good at it!!)
