It was to plug the PCV hose and count how many seconds before the engine shut down from the internal pressure pushing out the shut off diaphragm. People pointed out that that particular test could either blow out seals or be useless if seals had already failed.

The Sixty Gallon Force Flex bags are much better...... this is what Consumer's Reports said worked best when they did the tests.
just Duck ( or Duct ) Tape them to the valve cover hole.... it WILL take a while to blow them up..

Here's mine:

1983 300D turbo, 295,000 miles (prob has more) with last 60K on a custom WVO system of my own design.

Conditions:
1. Air temp 95F
2. Engine hot after driving 40 hwy miles
3. idle rpm= 750

It took 9 min 30 sec to inflate a 40 gal garbage bag to 3/4 full. It was so slow to inflate and I was getting impatient and shut it off before it fully inflated.

Engine runs amazingly well for it's age. Starts easily in the coldest CT winter. Good power, no smoke. Leaks a little at the rear main seal and burns some (I add a quart in approx 3,000 miles)

I think they are ignoring this great bag test due to them having an actual MACHINE which measures what is hoped to be measured by this bag...

Wow this thread brings back old memories. There is a machine. I designed one in my first job out of school. Here it is. Still in production from what I can see. MB was a hard sell because they generally bought German instruments for their dyno cells.

Blow by Meter

It had a flow mode and totalizer mode. It was a big virtual bag.
