1983 240D Questions and Issues

I recently picked up an 83 240D and just have a few questions regarding some of the components with it.
I was running it fine or about 500 miles when it developed a small leak in the cloth wrapped fuel line from the front of the fuel filter that then goes over to the forwardmost cylinder. Before i replaced that line the car would start as soon asi turned the key. Now since i have replaced the line it has to turn over much longer ( a few seconds) before it will start. There does not seem to be any air in the line and i am confused as to why it is starting harder. I don't really know what that line is or because there is then cloth wrapped lines from each of the injectors over to the next one, in addition to the metal lines that go into the top of the injectors. (This is my first diesel and i still don't know very much about them)
Also since this afternoon when i replaced then line, the fog lights and the left low beam headlight stopped working. The fuses are fine and there does not seem to be any visible issues with the wiring to that side off the vehicle. IT just seems weird because earlier in the day they were working fine. It was raining. Are there any known quirks with this sort of problem?

The cloth lines are the injector return lines. They return unburn fuel back to the tank via the filter. I'm not sure why you would have hard starting issues after changing them.

The hard steel lines are the supply lines for the injectors. They come out of the Injection Pump (IP), and go to the injectors.

You might check to see if they fog lights have cracks or holes in them. You said is was raining. They may have gotten filled up with water and blown the bulb.
