Unhappy 94 300D NEED your HELP

Hello again guy's,

Need your expert assistance again. My wifes 94 300D today developed a new wrinkle. I drove it home fine with no warnings, temperature, noises etc...this morning after my all night shift.
When I put the key in the ignition now I get the following lights on the instrument panel: Battery, SRS and glow plugs. A faint buzzer sounds in the background and the BATTERY light stays on. Turning the key to start the car results in nothing.

Tested the battery and it is OK. Verified by jumpering across the starter solenoid and firing the engine up. No noises or klanging.
The instrument panel however has no LIFE.

What do you suggest I look at first? What may have happened?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Adriano.

To add to what Terry said, if ti won't crank with the shift lever in N, move the shift lever forward and aft of N while the key is in start. Don't go so far as to engage R or D! To be safe, keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal and make sure there's nothing ahead of or behind your car.

Wouldn't a 94 be an E300? What engine is in that car? Where was it originally sold?

Question

Sorry for the late reply guy's,

Yes! The first thing I tried was the shift lever.

As it turns out the thinning wire on fuse number 5 (on the block) looked split to me, so I replaced it. Car cranked fine. Went around the block, up the street about a mile, lo an behold the gages went out and I could hear a faint buzzing sound (guess a alarm buzz of sorts) from under the dash.

Got back home. Inserted amp meter in line with fuse.....max 5.5A. User manual (have not bought service CD's yet, yes need to) states this fuse powers: Instrument gages, break lights, front cabin light........ dunno what possessed them to do this, but at any rate. Bought some new fuses just in case age has something to do with them.
During testing uninstalled and reinstalled break light bulbs, and moved cabin light selector switch.

Well my problem magically (for time being) went away........anyone else experienced such weirdness?
