How do I tell if 5 weak injectors or a weak pump?
How do I tell if 5 weak injectors or a weak pump?
My car seems to run a little shakey at idle with a slight miss on some of the cylinders. If I turn the idle up to 1000 RPM's it's smooth as a top. My guess is it's not spraying a good strong mist at a low RPM. Weak ip or injectors? I pulled the number one Injector out of the head and put the line back on and started the car and didn't notice any spray out of it but it was right next to the hole it goes in (number one pre-chamber) and the breeze coming out of that cylinder may have made it hard to see the injection spray. Is there a good way to test the injectors. No shop within 45 minutes or so.

With 300K miles, check your chain timing. If the chain is elongated it will cause the valve and injection timing to be retarded by the same number of degrees. If it's 4-8* elongated then you can install an offset cam key and reset your injection timing to get back alot of lost power. If it's more than 10*, it's time for a new chain.

I was gung-ho about the homebrewed pop tester until I saw the caution and the hand that resembled hamburger.

I wasn't planning to stick any fingers any where near a spraying injector. My worries are more with the thing I would build. With my luck it would explode in my face.

The SD? If so you may want to adjust, or replace the Rack Damper bolt. It resides on the back of the IP, just in front of the oil filter canister. Do this with engine at operating temp while running. 14mm lock nut and a 12mm adjusting bolt. Loosen lock nut, back out screw till you have a smooth idle. I had the same problem on mine (SD), replaced bolt with a gold colored one, worked fine for a few months, had to pull bolt and re-seat "o" ring. Problem solved. The spring in those bolts wear out over time. This is far less trouble than dealing with the IP. The best way to determine if the injectors are working properly, is to have them tested, preferably at a Bocsh authorized shop, or just about any place that works on diesel trucks. Hope this helps.

I did take 5 inj that I pulled out of a junkyard into a mom and pop diesel shop(http://www.dieselandimport.com/) here in the metro. they tested them for me, all were good. they wouldn't even take my money.
a while later I needed a few heat sheilds, as 2/5 of the ones from autohauzaz didnt seal, and they only charged me $4 for 3 of them- cheeeper than anywhere else I know of. needless to say, they now have my business(if I ever get in over my head)
