How often does your 617 diesel see 4400 RPM?

I love driving my 300SD like I stole it. almost always start off in "2" until 4000 RPM two times then throw it into 3 at about 4000 RPM then again into "D" at 4000 RPM (If I'm on the highway)

My 300SD almost always chirps tires inbetween one and two.

So I was wondering who else red lines daily?

Chirping the tires is very hard on the flex disks. Be sure to check their health regularly.

I do, usually when the engine is still cold

Several times yesterday...well, 4,000 anyway.

Ok, I didn't make it to 4,400. I am just a wannabe.

Well, IMHO, another 'hobby' vehicle make is in order for you. Perhaps something that burns gasoline and was made by an American car company in the 1960's...you're playing an expensive game if you truly care about your Benz, or your pocketbook...

Refresh me again, how fast should 4400rpm be with a turbo 617, 1983?

never above 3500, though getting there, when the oil is fully hot, can be donw awful quick... and smokily.

Engine runs like a champ, and 28+ MPG is doable in a w123 with a little care.

if you want a car to drive like you stole, buy a BMW. AT cars are not performance cars, especially diesels, and youre fooling yourself to drive otherwise.

Many times per day. Especially if I am going over 95mph.

My engine is sparkly clean, after 30k of no purge, I did one, and just about nothing came out in the stuff that went through, nor did it improve the performance any....which is excellent.

I drove 380 miles today going about 78-95mph, with a few runs topping 100....my mileage was: 25.4mpg

My engine is a smooth running beast, and it loves its straight pipe.

I rarely bring it to 4000 rpm...........never to 4400. What for?

It gets plenty of workout at 3000 rpm at maximum continuous power for 45 seconds to 1 minute in a hill climbing exercise at 68 mph.

I don't wanna burn gasoline,, I do this burning 100% WVO. Granted it the car doesn't accelerate like a 60's chevy, but it sure sounds awesome. Expensive game NO WAY, this car will be a parts car if and when she croaks. (She's been in surgery since the front right wanted to occupy the same space as something else (previous owner). And at $1000 (what I paid for the car) I won't lose any money on this one either.

On a side note, I bet I have the cleanest injectors on this forum

I NEVER drive like a bat outta hell until the temp reads close to 80,,, I'm NOT that stupid.

4400RPM in 1st gear is around 20 MPH, 2nd gear around 45 MPH, 3rd around 70 MPH, don't know what 4400 is in fourth, never been there in this car. If you look at your speedo, you'll see 1 dot, 2 dots, and 3 dots, those indicate redline.

I don't feel like I'm doing anything bad to the car, as German engineers would never make a car that would break as the engine approaches redline,,, belts are another story.

Nothing lasts forever.

The point of highest stress on all rotating components is at redline. The engine puts the greatest loads on every single component in the engine at redline.

If you believe the engine has a finite life, you'll agree that stressing it to the maximum possible degree on a frequent basis will, by definition, shorten that life.

Whether the foreshortened life is within your purvey is an entirely different question.

Naturally, if you believe the Germans designed this engine to run at 4400 rpm for an infinite lifespan.......then I wish you the best of luck with it.

Same here, I normally let it shift in the 3000 -3500 range unless I'm trying to accelerate quickly, then I might get near 4000 rpm. Anything beyond that just makes more noise.

I shift it at 2000 rpm............maybe 2800 on the 3-4 so the a/h behind me doesn't get an MI while driving...........I get to the next red light about 30 seconds behind the left lane pack. Sometimes, if nobody steals the gap, I sail right past them...........fully stopped...........I love it.

BTW........SD went 540 miles on 17.52 gallons..........with a/c!!

The tach was broke on mine, but I didn't care since it was an auto. I just floored it from a stop and it did its thing, I'm sure it went over 4k all the time.

I still see it running around town, will that car never die!?
