Rear Spring noise in 82 300d
My lovely 82 300d, Charmian, has been making some funny noises. I have isolated the noise to the rear springs. First it started with the right rear and now it appears to be both the left and the right. They sound as if they are catching on something and then suddenly releasing with a deep, what else can I describe it as other than a deep spring noise. It only happens, obviously they are springs, when I go over speed bumps or pull in my driveway.
Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to stop the noise permanently???? I have already sprayed them with WD-40 just to see if it would help but really what good is WD-40 anyway?

Welcome to the forum.
I'm a bit baffled on how the springs could make such a noise unless they are fractured. If so, then the noise would be typical. However, fractured springs are quite rare on these vehicles. Any way you can bounce the rear of the vehicle while someone listens close to the wheel wells to attempt to determine the source? I've got some doubts that the springs are the culprit. Also, jack up the rear of the vehicle and block the body. Take a careful look at the springs for any signs of fracture on any of the coils. Use a powerful light to see clearly under there. |
