Car brokedown 2 hours from home (Jackson, MS)

Due to a failed $15 part...

Long story short, there is a linkage that goes from the throttle cable to the injection pump that broke. On my W116 they're all nice metal rods, but on my 2.5T they're metal... with plastic ends. The metal rod pulled out of one of the plastic pieces. So I can idle anywhere I want to!

Funny thing is that halfway to Jackson a little plastic piece broke (see a trend here?) that clips the throttle cable to all the throttle linkages. I was able to fix that with a napkin though!

I think there is at least one or two members in Jackson... the car is in the Target parking lot (with BestBuy and Pets Mart in the same center) on Hwy 25. I'll be there Saturday morning around 10AM to replace it if anybody wants to have a mini get-together

I had a throttle cable break (in the firewall) when I was 300 miles from home. It was inaccessible with the tools I had. Cruise control saved my butt. I rigged up cordage to the throttle, out the hood, through the window, tied to a screwdriver for a handle. Once the car got above 30 mph I'd engage the cruise and it was easy. Fun part was driving through city traffic. Made it home with no problems. Looks like you are set with help. Good luck.

Hi MS folks. I was there last month, drove from Jackson to Forestville. From there to Starksville then to FL. I like MS. Jackson is a little like parts of Oakland, CA a place you do not want to be stranded anytime of day! Forestville is pleasant though. Even had a snake slithering across at the entranceway to the Holiday Inn the night we arrived.

If I had let you know before I was there we could have met up somewhere.
Oh well, small world
As for the plastic ends on the control rods used in 124 and later models, they can be replaced by the good old metal ones if you want, they use the same screw threads. I still wonder why MB had to change them, how much did they save (in weight or $$)?

I assume you meant Forest - fairly quiet town. Yup - should have hollered could have taken in a dog fight and some beers

I could show you some places in Jackson that would make you feel comfortable in Oakland

Thanks for the offer TX! Hopefully I won't *need* to call you but if you'd like to meet up and grab a bite to eat I'm game.

Looks like I was optimistic on the 10AM part... my brother normally has the morning off, but it is the opposite this Saturday. I'll be cruising in around 6PM. Pending the part actually making it in today...

I agree on the metal vs. plastic... for such a critical part you would think they would keep it metal.

That's friggin awesome..

Very rare occasion I get a chance to do stuff like that, but every now and then I need to pull a McGyver myself. Years ago I had to do stuff a lot more often than now, older cars...ehem

That whole thing you did, seams like it was a bit of fun..

I'm going to start calling you McGyver.

Just got back... everything went off without a problem and enjoyed the nice ride back up to Starkville.
