Is this guy nuts?

I am no diesel expert....

Saw an ad for a 1980 300SDL with 107k miles. Guy wants $15k. I have a 116 car, a 6.9, and my gut feel is this guy is off by a factor of 2. What you guys think? Assume the car is in great shape for the sake of argument.

Fred

If he truly has a 1980 300SDL, it's worth a hell of a lot more than 15K.

For $15K, it had better be very nice.

Even if it is mint, it is too expensive.

OK then.

Yep, $15K is a bit ridiculous, but, we really don't know the condition of the vehicle. If it's in excellent condition, the price is probably close to double the value. But, if it's showroom condition, there is no ceiling on the price because someone will pay it.

I don't know about the older SDs, but the price does seem to be moving. A friend of mine (my indy) just sold his 84 300D (about 130K miles, I think) for $12K. This car was a nice driver, but far from showroom. He had it listed for $12.5 (someone here linked it and said he was dreaming), and got an offer for $12 within a week. It was in pretty good cosmetic shape (I've driven it while he worked on mine), he had the paint spruced up and replaced the grill/headlights, the interior was about like mine (maybe 9/10), the engine/tranny feels strong but I always thought the steering was a tad loose.

As I recall, he paid about $5K for it a couple of years ago (it had a small dent in the door) and probably put $3-4K (and some labor) into it to fix the body and a few other little nits.

It appears that some folks are willing to pay a premium for relatively low mileage cars.

being very clean w/nice paint and a new interior will always get you someone to pay more than its worth. last year i sold an 84 sl 500 euro with 176k on it 4 16k.
i had just put a beautiful 3- stage paint job on it and re-apolstered the interior. it was recently tuned up with new brakes but i dont think it was worth 16k i only payed 3500 4 it.

I have a 79 SD with 129K that I'd sell for that factor of 2 price.
