Engine vibration - mounts or rack dampener?

OK all

When the engine is cold I get little vibration but once it's been driven for a while and the engine is hot vibration when stopped (in gear, foot on brake) is quite noticeable. Smooth as silk when in motion.

Any advice on whether I should mess with the engine mounts or simply adjust the rack damper bolt first? How do I tell which is at fault?

1983 300sd about 130,000 kms (or so it says)

Thanks!

Here is the order I would go in:

1) rack dampener - costs you nothing but time unless you need the new one.

2) Valve adjustment - Preventative maintenance and only costs you a valve cover gasket and maybe some tools.

3) Motor Mounts - Try to get OEM ones if you end up replacing them. Do not go for the cheap ones or you might find yourself replacing them sooner than you want. They can be a PITA to swap out.

Do you notice excess smoke when the engine is at operating temps?

Ditto, adjust the rack damper bolt first. And you may need a new one. On the rear of the IP just in front of the oil canister you'll a bolt with a lock nut. You need to adjust with engine running at operating temp. 14mm lock nut, 12mm bolt. Loosen lock nut, back bolt out till a smooth idle is achieved. If you can see the color, and it's silver, replace. Not very expensive, much easier than engine mounts. Valves too, take a pic of linkage before you remove anything.
