Possible Alternative to an R4 on 300SD?

Hi, I'm wondering if there isn't a better compressor than an R4 to put on my 300SD. From what I've studied, the R4 is non-durable, and sucks power compared to the newer nippondenso units used after 86 on MB.........

Tons of people are running on cheap 5yr+ rebuilt nippondenso's....... A BRAND NEW R4 can sometimes fail in less than 7 yrs..... EVEN with proper prep........

If I'm gonna go to R12, I want a good reliable compressor. Plus, a newer compressor will probably have a higher BTU rating, hence, better cooling. Which, coupled with a Parallel flow condenser, should be killer.......

my euro 300TD looks like it had a/c put in after it was built, it doesn't have an R4 on it but I have no idea what brand compressor is on it. I does look a little more like the nippondenso ones though. In the next week or so I plan on going over the car to swee what it needs so if I can find a brand, I'll post it with some pics.

Talked to a guy at Hodyon (Hancock Industries) and he said that the Sanden compressor is a common aftermarket unit. It has 6 pistons, and robs less power with more BTU's than the R4...... He said that it would be easier and money better spent to stick with the R4, get a parallel flow condensor, and a big electric fan, as well as make sure the engine fan clutch is working... This is even more applicable if you're going to stay with r12.........

FWIW, Hodyon has NEW R4's for $175..... The affore-mentioned Sanden is $225........

My original R4 ('82 300D) was still working when I replaced it last summer when I converted back to R12.. The last seven years had been with R134a.

and the original R4 in my 87 astro van still cools fine with R12 still in it from the factory... perhaps the replacements were installed improperly? lack of good flush? who knows...

Where do we find a parallel flow condenser? Are alterations to sheet metal or other parts necessary to install it?

Thanks!

I have found several parallel flow condensers for sale on ebay, but they are not as big as I would like, perhaps one from a 124 or 201 would be adaptable... hmm.

Is a parallel flow condenser a device that replaces the original condenser, or is it one that supplements the original condenser?

What are the odd of finding a functional one of these in a junkyard?
