Im thinking about biting the bullet and getting some gloves. I got diesel poisoning 10 years ago working next to a diesel powered welding machine (outside) from the exhaust. Since then I'm super sensitive to diesel, if I leave it on my hands after pumping, or even worse, splash some on my legs, I get a massive headache and feel nauseated. Its still worth it. Maybe I'll move to Jersey or Oregon and let somebody else do the deed.

I am an opportunist. If the gloves are there, I use it. If not, I use whatever I have at hand, news paper, paper towels, plastic bags, whatever. Getting diesel on you makes you to go bald. I have a full head of hair.

Gloves? I spend 8-12 hours a day working in ink, naptha, acetone, oil and grease. The only time I've had a prob was when I got into the phenoid (xlyene, toluene, bezene, isopropyl alcohol)w/o gloves on...won't do that again in this lifetime it took a day before the skin started to slough but when it did it came off in sheets. As for diesel I reckon it's kinda like ink on my sandwich...gives a bit of flavor. Besides..if I wore gloves how would my heeler ever respect me again?

I was just searching for something else and I came across this old thread. Good laughs for sure. I have never used gloves to fill up before, but a good towel or something seems like it might be a good idea. While I personally like the sweet bouquet of diesel & biodiesel I can't help but think that my plush steering wheel does not.
The nozzles are always coated with gunk around here.

I filled at a station today that had a lonely little diesel pump with a single nozzle. But it was shiny and clean, and no grime to speak of. My hands don't smell like diesel, but they did smell like power service for a while, because I spilled some on my hands. That smell goes away pretty fast though.
Today a guy with gasser minivan filled up across from me and left it running while doing so. People are crazy. (I leave mine running, but gasser = a little bit risky to do that!!!)

Nitriles for me!
I get a hand full of nitrile gloves at work. All the pumps I've used were greasy. I also don't want the additives ( stink bad ) to get on me.

I used to think of gloves as girly man stuff- but you only get two hands. I use gloves when working on my cars, and fueling when they are there. I like the smell of diesel, but it's not good for you skin or body. I don't let people fuel my car- even in Jersey. I'll drive to another station before I let someone fuel my car.

Stanley (brand) Nitrile gloves
Your local Lowe's has them in a box of 50 for less than $6.00 U.S.
'No stink, no fuss, no muss...'Keep a box in the trunk alla'time. 'You look like a "Professional Wrench Turner"/or a surgeon with them on. 'Besides you never know when you might have to change a tire for a Damsel in distress...'Don't want to hand her back into her car with "Funky" hands! |

I snagged some clear, one size fits all, gloves a couple years ago. I can wear them over my driving gloves, they seem to let some of the odor through however.
I also keep a pair of leather work gloves in the trunk just in case of tire changes or road-kill handling.

Don't care too much about getting my hands dirty but I do like to keep my benz clean. I bought a box of gloves at wall mart and they are always dirty when I throw em away. Seems like all of the pumps around here drip a little after shut off and they are always a mess.
