My guess is you're asking if an 84 300D (sedan) engine will drop into an 81 300TD (wagon)....
Aside from the obvious answers folks will give about "yes it will "fit", it won't "work" due to the fact of no hydraulic pump mounted on the head of a sedan. Wagons (TD's---Touring Diesel) utilize a timing chain driven hydraulic pump attached to the front of the head for the hydraulic suspension, or SLS.
You DON'T want a wagon without a properly operating SLS! Not even open for debate....
You will need a wagon engine from '81-'84. 85's used a different tranny, vac system, tach system, etc..... and 79 and 80 were non-turbos. I guess an '85 could be made to work, just a little more of a hassle.
It is possible to find a Euro sedan motor that had SLS, but they are very rare over here, and usually non-turbo'd.
Doesn't sound like you will be blazin for awhile.......

Sure, but the self leveling system needs the pump on the TD head.

What's wrong with the engine in the wagon?

There is a '84 wagon in my local bone yard with MOST of the engine left. The head, manifolds, turbo are there, but the front has been picked over (There is no crank pulley, fan, and some other accessories are missing. The SLS pump is there. The guys there would probably let it go for 500 bucks. You would have top have it shipped to your location. If you have a complete engine and can move the accessories over it might be worth a shot.

Give them a call

You could use the head (& pump) off the TD engine.
