Found a car!
Folks,
After searching for about 4 months, I finally pulled the trigger on a pretty clean '85 300d Turbo, yellow with tan M/B tex interior. 123k, a/c converted to r134 (at least it kinda works!). I took it to my mechanic and this is what he says it needs: 1. center steering link 2. left side tie rod assy. 3. steering damper shock 4. Muffler 5. valve cover gasket 6. oil leak. He's going to wash the engine for me, so we can determine exactly where it is. I'm new to all of this. What can I expect an honest mechanic to charge for the front end/muffler stuff? I mean, a rough ballpark..... Thanks in advance. The forum is my lifeline! Slim |

Allot of folks will be able too tell you HOW TO DO IT, fewer will know how much it costs to have a shop do it, big variables in "shops". Spend you money on some tools

You'll need an alignment with those steering parts. My alignment shop charged me $20 to put on a tie rod with the alignment. I supplied the part.
Stevo's on the money. Almost always cheaper in the long run to buy tools instead of paying hourly labor rates.

Whenever I have worked it out, the cost in labor of a shop doing a job is almost always more or less what the cost of the tools to do the job end up being. Assuming you have the basic essentials (3/8 and 1/2" socket set, jack, jack stands). One trip to harbor freight will set you up with a decent set of tools for under $200. The only exception so far to this rule is wheel alignments.

Keep in mind that a lot of mechanics will recommend replacing a part if it shows the slightest sign of wear. After all that's how they make money. I'm not saying your mechanic is necessarily lying, but it helps to learn some car stuff, buy some tools, and at least be familiar with what your mechanic is fixing/replacing. You don't want to be taken for a ride.
