Thank that to the 100,000 mile tune up and 150,000 mile Deathcool.

I have never seen sparkplugs last 100,000 miles and perform well, and Deathcool turns to jelly.

If you want reliability, you must have relibility in maintenance.

Hmmm... I would get something with the OM617.95x engine in it. A solid 300SD or 300D from 81-85 would be my choice. As was stated before, get the best one you can afford as a cheap one will need lots of parts and time to bring up to snuff.

As far as running it on veg oil, please think that over very carefully. I would suggest joining a local bioDiesel coop and using that for fuel. There are two armed camps in this forum the petro guys and the veggies. Both have lots of opinions and get into all kinds of arguments. However, MB does not recommend raw oils as fuel so I will not run my car on anything that is not a real fuel.

Good luck with the search...

I'm a supporter of biodiesel, but not veggie oil as fuel. There are very few people here if any who are against all alternative fuels.

I'm with you... However, it seems that the raw veg oil guys are always getting into it with the nothing but petroleum guys.

I say split the difference and run refined bioD...

If you're concerned about the environment, use biodiesel which is much closer in spec to regular diesel which the engine was designed for. There are tons of veggie-converted MB diesels for sale on Ebay, especially on the west coast. I wonder why.
If they are driving for "free" I have also wondered why so many are being dumped. If you want a really cheap car and low fuel costs get an older volkswagon diesel and run it on reasonable fuel..

I'll second that. My first car was an '82 VW Jetta diesel. Eventually it ended up in my parents' fleet, giving them 50mpg in their commute over the mountains from the Oregon coastline to Portland twice a week. As far as we could tell, it also had nearly 1M miles on the clock, but the odometer had quit at 798k, two owners back.

The 'fun' with VW is that the electronics were never their strong point. Dad kept meeting highway patrol when they'd pull him over during that commute, due to the tail lights dieing again(and again, and again...)
