Is this car worth this price? 85 300SD, SF, CA
Hi all,
I'm wondering what you folks think of the price on this car. Seems high, even for the condition its in, and being in SF Bay Area. Thanks... Craig Mercedes Benz 1985 300SD Like New only 96K miles - $18000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: sale-415833582@craigslist.org Date: 2007-09-06, 5:04PM PDT This is a truly special car. 1985(last year for the W126 with the 617 turbo diesel). Black on black. NO paint work EVER. No dings, dents, rust or scratches. Garaged since day one. Car stayed at a Tahoe vacation home, and was used in the summer. Newer Michellin tires. Needs nothing. Converted to run on vegetable oil or diesel. Knock about $10,000 off for not having any engine pictures, being converted for veggie oil and no documentation.

No it is not worth it. If it is some hacked single tank conversion it is not worth further discussion

Is that a high-mileage badge on the grille??
Anyway, I've seen that guy post his ads up here in Seattle with some elaborate story on how every car he has is a little old lady car from AZ, CA, NM, Etc. Regardless of whether or not it's true, he's completely out of his mind with his prices even for the NW or San Fran. I've seen some of his diesels for over 20k. I think you could find a much better deal if you just look around, just keep in mind on a well taken care of diesel Benz the difference between 98k and 150k is negligible. |

It's a European delivery program badge. Is that steering wheel correct? Did all 126's have Airbag's in 85? I thought it was only the 500's.

I agree, it's just not that special. As thatguy says, 98K miles is little better than 150K and maybe less so -- if this car truly was a vacation car, that means it sat around a lot. Sitting is as bad or worse than being driven, especially if the garage it sits in is cold and damp (and how would you ever know?). It probably needs a lot of work on the suspension system, all of the rubber may need replacing, a/c repairs, etc. Probably $5000 to get it nice, on top of the purchase price.
It appears that this car was not originally owned by the current seller so all information is third-hand (at least) to you. Unless the seller has a complete set of service papers from Day 1, I'd keep looking.

Why is just about every other old MB diesel on the market converted to run on veggie oil, especially in CA? I'm sick and tired of seeing this crap. Personally I wouldn't touch a veggie car with a 10-ft pole. Those cars are typically owned by cheap owners who don't want to waste a penny on anything unnecessary. If you do buy a car like that, don't be surprised to find the injectors and combustion chambers clogged with deposits. I have no issues with biodiesel but that's a completely different animal and frequently confused with veggie oil by the ignorant folks out there.
