I am putting my diff cover back on after cv axle replacement job and need to know if I'm supposed to torque down the cover BEFORE or AFTER the silicone RTV has set overnight??? Thanks

Actually, the directions for silicone are, spread a THIN coat where it needs to go, let it skin over, then gently attach the parts, wait overnight, THEN final torque.

Really?!

I called my indy and was told to apply the RTV as directed on package then start torque-ing down by 5 - 10 ft/lb increments in a rotation, much the same way you would torque a set of lugs or head bolts etc. That way you are gently 'squishing' the sealer so that it ends up being evenly 'squished', and then let it set up 24 hours or so.

That's the way I went ahead and did it...

Thanks for the replies. Getting ready to take 'er out for a trial run after the cv axles replacement! Wish me...Godspeed?
