starter for a w123--any recommendations?

I've gone through 2 rebuilt starters in the past year for my 84 300cd.

Replacing them is getting old--not very fun.

Anyone have a recommendation on where i can get the best quality rebuilt starter?

Also, is it just my bad luck, or are there any other reasons they may be failing so quickly on my car?

instead of a rebuild get a brand new one... mean green starters are pricy but are probably the best aftermarket starter out there...

Personally, I prefer use a local rebuilder shop. (Search: Auto Electric, Electric Motor rewinders, Starter rebuilder/repair)

In my area, they are less expensive than the Mexican rebuilds from AutoZone plus they use higher quality components...and they are real, live, knowlegeable people that can discuss the issue with you!

Oh, they are a lot less expensive than a new part and so far, I have 7 years on my 1st generation rebuilt starter on the 240D...

Have you tried a BOSCH rebuild?

Was your heat shield still in place? Heat from the exhaust pipe will kill the starter overtime.

tried the bosch rebuild...

The bosch rebuild is the starter i'm using now & i had a no-name cheap-o before that and I learned my lesson quick.

However, now that the bosch appears to be failing, i wanted to see what my options were.

thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Local wisdom..

.

I second the idea of finding a good local rebuilder.

Find the oldest guy on a tractor you can
and ask him where he has his starters rebuilt.

Have Fun !

The rebuilts from california perhaps. The vendors that have perfect feedback on ebay. They are doing something right. Eighty dollars including shipping to your front door. No core return. Quite a few members have been using them for alternators.
