One and a two and a.........?

Hello All,

I have a 1987 300SDL and it does not shift into third gear. First and second work great! It shifts out of second and seems to go into neutral. The motor just revs up and the car rolls to a stop before it will go back into 1st, and near a stop before it returns to second. The vacuum hose is hooked up and in good shape as well as the electrical connectors.

By the way what is the trans model in this car? 722.???.

Thank you all in advance for sharing your thoughts, I love this site.

One can only make some guesses based on your two line description of the problem. First how does your transmission fluid look? Transmission services lately?
Check the ATF level, and colour.

If it's low, it'll be reluctant to up-shift, same applies if it's dirty.

ATF does require replacing.

If it's almost black, I'd say the clutch bands are burnt.

If it's grey, (metal swarf) then suspect more serious mechanical failure

condition

I changed the filter recently. The fluid is fresh and clean and was so before I changed the filter.

I bought the car six months ago and it was not running when purchased. 315K on the odometer.

I had the trans out of the car recently. If the length of the shift rod was altered could that cause this?

What actuates the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts? Is it electric soloenoid or vacuum or hydraulic?

Where can I get a set of manuals for this trans? This would probably be the best place to start.

I appreciate any suggestion because I really need to get this thing running reliable for use.
Thanks for your reply.

If the car uses a bowden cable, it shifts based on linkage position. Too tight and you almost have to let off the accelerator to make it upshift.

This is a guess since I have the 722.3xx tranny mated to the om617,
