Need Buying Advise: '81 300TD Wagon
So I found a 1981 300TD wagon with 209K. The guy told me it didn't run and he doesn't know what's wrong with it. "Something easy" he says, yeah right. So even with ether this thing won't kick at all, and there's a lot of blow-by coming out of the oil filler hole. The engine needs a total rebuild.
The rest of the car is fair. Moon roof doesn't leak. Rust in the normal spots, more than I'd care to have, but not too bad. All glass is there. no rips in seats. I could rock it. So my question is this. What's a fair price for this car, with a blown engine? I'm quite mechanically inclined and wouldn't mind attempting to rebuild the engine myself, or have the block done by professionals. The guy originally wanted $1000 and was quick to let me know he wanted to sell. I don't really want to give the dude more than a few hundred for it .... thoughts, suggestions? Thanks!

The local indy pays a standard $300 for cars like that. If the head is trashed, beware that the self leveling suspension pump bolts to the head, and the head is unique to the 300TD models.
I wouldn't pay more than $300 to $400 for a car like that, considering that the condition of the rest of the driveline is unknown.

Are the glow plugs working properly?
What do other members think of using ether in a diesel?- I have read it is a no-no somewhere.

well they actually make ether injection systems for diesel engines for aid in cold starts....
didn't take out the glow plugs, but tested resistance - they are ok. besides, we would've gotten a kick or sputter or something out of it with ether. the car clearly has little or no compression...

yeah, they do, but not for indirect injection motors... the ether explosion is too bad, it can destroy the PC and the pintle ball.

I second the notion that this is a $300 -$400 car. If you do
take the plunge, I know where a very nice running motor is that only has 141k on it ....not a rebuild either, but you will need to swap heads for the TD.

Maybe $300 or so, not much more than that. It is really not worth much of anything in its present condition, considering the expense of bringing it back.
I'd offer that, and if he says no, then leave your phone number, while you are walking away. It would not be surprising that after awhile, you get a call back.
