odometer- set to approx. mileage???
I'm about to tackle the DIY odometer rebuild/cleaning and was wondering if anyone who has done this has set the odometer to approximately where it should be, if it can be guess-t-mated given the length of time it has been sluggish/not functioning and a rough idea of the mileage covered in that time is known. In my case, it currently reads 227,052 (and turns one mile every 50-60 actually travelled) but I feel I can safely estimate the actual reading to be in the neighborhood of 260,xxx. This is based on my use of the car and the meticulous journal of a PO
. Thoughts???

I say go for it. I found records indicating my 300D had 480K on it, and then another repair receipt three years later with the same 480K listed, yet there were also a slew of diesel fuel receipts between and after the dates of the receipts. The newest repair receipt listing mileage was from 1992. The broken original odometer in the trunk? It still read 480K. When I reworked mine, I set it at 500,000. It could be higher, and most likely is, but I can't prove it. 500K seems like a nice number, though. It'll be easier to keep track of the miles I add to the car in the future, since I have a nice, even starting point.
