I think the W140 needs the might of the M120, IMHO. That's the engine that belongs in that car if you want some meat under the hood. The sound of that thing when you get on it, is heavenly. Basically, like two M104's joined together sharing a common crank.
Low 5 second sounded a bit too fast for me. I remember when Road & Track only got 6.4 seconds for the first gen. Porsche turbo. They later admitted that they had dumped the clutch too hard and it dogged on takeoff. It could really do right at 6 seconds.

Naturaly they are slow when compared to the newer MB's.

Something like say an S65 can go to 60 in about the mid 4 second range, not bad for a fully loaded heavy sedan.

The AMG S class's are 200mph cars. Diesels cannot deleiver that kind of performance.
