W126 300SD Trans Problem
Hey guys I need your help on this one. I was going down to New Orleans on Sunday and about 50 miles away the trans line blew out from the cooler and leaked most of the oil out. I stopped immediately to figure out what happened and tried to get someone to tow me in. Nobody could do it on Sunday and I needed to be back for work so I limped 4 miles to the nearest gas station. About 1/4 mile from the station I lost what I believe to be almost all drive power. I do not know how I made it up the ramp and around the corner but there must have been just enough friction to get me to the station. I figure that I must have destroyed all the clutch discs in the trans...but as I am not familiar with the design of this transmission I don't know what could have happened. If anyone has any insight I would very much appreciate it. I took a cab back from the station.
Have I destroyed a transmission or is it a matter of getting the line fixed filling it with fluid and starting it up to circulate the fluid? A buddy with an American car had the same failure and went 6-10 miles back home and then filled it up replaced the line and has had no problems since. I know the tolerances in a German auto box are a quite a bit tighter than in an American auto box so there would be much more friction but what do you all think? (Yea I'm an idiot for trying to limp to the station) Thanks |

Only way to find out it to fix the leak, fill the trans with fluid and see how the transmission works. Good LUCK. P E H |
