I was disconcerted to find my 300TD behaving a bit sluggishly in NYC yesterday. At first I wrote it off to the incredible heat, full blast AC, and the punishing chore of moving. After multiple trips to storage with a full load and lots of idling in traffic, I figured it just need to get out on the open road for an Italian Tune Up.
When it didn't perk up after a 70mi trip to Danbury and back I got concerned and decided to check on the banjo fitting and thin pressure tube between there and the cross-over switch. This is the path to tell the ALDA that you've got lots of air pressure in the manifold. Guess what? It was caked with black powdery soot. I was suprise because I had thoroughly cleaned it less than a year ago. Well cleaning that again put everything right. If you have a turbo charged diesel this is the most cost effective performance enhancing measure you can take.

Don't forget that the switchover valve itself may be similarly clogged.

You are likely already aware of this but if a BB or other similar object were to get accidently wedged in the vacuum line to your EGR valve you accumulate far less soot in your ALDA line and other places.
