Fellas, Fellas......... I truly hope no one does that Lets have some integrity as members....

The only time I can see where actual mileage can be skewed is when an odo stops or is not working upon purchase and you fix it, its a bit difficult to guess what actual miealge is. So, I think the tendency is that it picks up where it was left of. You can't be faulted for that....

I know why my SD cluster doesn't work, 3 of the gears crumbled to pieces.

That is my fear - that I will get the dang thing out, have everything ready to roll, and the gears will be in pieces. I guess that will mean a trip to dealerville for premium priced replacement gears......or back to sqaure one - find a junked (working) odo.

P.S. looove the avatar (though I'm a Mandriva guy myself)

It so happens that I have my odometer apart on my workbench right now...I have the little shaft out along with the slipping pot metal gear. The numbers are still in the odo, held in with a 7/64 drill bit.

I scored up the shaft and am ready to reassemble. I really don't want to have to take the cluster out again, so I'd like to put on some loctite. However, I can't figure out how to get the glue down into the space where the gear meets the shaft without getting loctite over everything. There isn't much space between all the pieces.

Has anyone used a syringe or something to do this? Any tips would be welcome. Or am I worrying too much, and should just put it back together already?

thanks,

FOLLOW UP: I went and scored up the shaft a little more and put the whole thing back together...drove it this morning and it's worked OK for 10.1 miles anyway. Nice to have a working clock and odo, thanks to the forum!

Only glitch - while driving with the sun over my left shoulder, I saw a fingerprint on the speedometer - must have not done a good enough job wiping it clean. It's going to drive me crazy unless I disassemble and re-clean. Crap!

thanks,

I dont use thread lock, one drop in the wrong place and its all over I "nick" the shaft with a pair of small bolt cutters, of course you cant get too vigorous but its seems safer than super glue or thread lock.

Speedo repair

VW1300,
Yep, I used a hypodermic needle to put a tiny bit of green Loctite on the shaft next to the metal gear. The best way to get a small amount of Loctite into the needle is to put the tip of the needle into a drop of the green Loctite and press DOWN hard on the plunger and let it rebound and suck up a small amount of the liquid. Try it a couple of times to be sure before you put the needle on the shaft. If you fill the hypodermic the normal way you will have way more Loctite than you can control because it is darn near impossible to see where you have to put it.

I think I found a site that has the gears. Only problem is they're specified by how many teeth they have, and well, i don't know how many teeth each gear has. The prices are about $36 a gear.

PS: And thanks on the avatar. I've used Red Hat, Fedora Core, and multiple flavors of Ubuntu.

Contact a person who repairs a lot of these heads. He might have reasonable price parts. I would not entertain 36.00 a gear for multiples. You can probably buy a flat rate head repair with warranty cheaper.

W123 and W126 speedos are completely different. Often, 123 odometer failures can be repaired by scoring the shaft where the slipping gear resides.

The W126 speedos all suffer from one small gear that crumbles to pieces. Easy if you have the correct gear.

Just got mine done at Jeff's house, by Jeff himself. Nice guy. I'd recommend www.odometergears.com to anyone.

Tested today, works fine. Painted the needles too, while I was in there.
