vacuum...1/2 shift flairing...not kicking down...
hey guys,
this forum is great ...tons of awsome info...i just spent hours reading looking for the answer to my problem but Im such a noob that alot of the answers contain names and terms that im not yet aware of....please help me solve my problem... ive got a 81 300D. Ive had it 4 months. I changed the oil and messed up some of the vacuum lines going into the fire wall but have found photos and reconnected everything but im still having a problem... when giving full throttle from a stop the engine will rev high for a second or 2 in between shifts from 1/2. also, when flooring it on the expressway or a hill, it no longer downshifts for more power. a few more details. none of the power locks were working right so i disconected the main vac switch from the door lock because the engine wouldnt shut off unless the door was locked. that was a while ago and the car was shifting correctly after i did that. also, the heavy vac line from the pump to the brake booster has tape wrapped around the "T" to the injection pump. i dont have a vac gauge but its looking like im going to need one to do this correctly. ok, sorry i know its not alot of info, but is there any easy way to isolate the problem? Thanks Dan |

Why is the Tee taped. If it is cracked, you already have pretty much isolated the problem. That main vacuum line is an assembly and not really repairable. I would replace the line before going any farther. Give Phil a call in the parts dept.

update...temp fix
hey just wanted to say thanks to this forum ive found the problem and temp fixed it until i can get the right part. after reading post after post i concluded i was getting too much vacuum to the tranny and it was causing flairs and early shifts. log story short, i made my own orfice out of tape with a small hole it and installed it on the "t" of the brake booster hose. this reduced the amount of vac getting to the trans and sharpened up the shifts and delayed them a little....the cars much faster now and no "slipping".....
i think i need a new brake booster cable to make the fix permanent but i have another theory..... when i bought the car the power locks were very leaky. i had to have the drivers door locked to shut off the engine. i got sick of that and disconected the power locks....my theory is that this disconnecting of the power locks made the vac system less leaky and was sending too much vacuum to the trans. maybe the vac was increased before i had the car in order to compensate for the leaks in the door locks? does that make any sence? thanks Dan |
