1982 300d owners

Hi All, just brought a 1982 300d, the PO removed the heater mono value
replaced it with a piece of heater hose. I have a new value and need to know which inet/outet goes to the auxiliary water pump. just looking at it seems that the bottom inet/outet should go to the pump, anyone??
