Front windshield seal, too big? or . . .
am I missing something ? I've received two front windshield seals from an online store that appear to be too big for my '79 240D. It's an after market seal that came in a bag that says, URO parts riktig kvalitet. Does anyone have experience with these seals? Are they ****?
I did this job on my rear windshield a couple of years ago, and the seal was very difficult to get on, and it's done an excellent job of sealing. This seal has a lot of slack at the top and on the top corners. I'm wondering if I need to insert the metal trim as I go along, or glue the seal to the windshield. That would be pretty tough since I needed to use a little dish soap to slide the seal on the first time around. thanks, Otto |

I don't recognize that make. But I have posted more than a few posts warning people NOT to use aftermarket window seals on Mercedes. They typically are sloppy in the corners. The Dealer is the best source (but watch out they don't get one from WorldPac and sell it to you! Don't ask me how I know or I will be forced to tell you which dealer did that!) The BEST seals come in a Blue MB logo labeled plastic sack.
The rope action is critical. I can't begin to tell you anything because I have not done this myself, just watched it done more than a few times. I saw a couple guys at a shop (now closed) in Alameda they had the seal in a W123 almost complete but the window didn't quite fit at the last corner so they were slapping the glass with their palms trying to force it in when it suddenly cracked all the way across

So is the windshield seal from fastlane no good?

It would seem that the seal is too big. It should fit tightly on your windshield just as your back seal did. Once it's on the glass, then put on the trim.
I had a glass shop do both of mine about a year ago. I took the seals to them, which were made in Germany by Meyle. The fit was, and still is fine. |

I did not buy the seal from fastlane. I got it from a guy in Atlanta who shipped out a replacement when the first one didn't fit. I'll see if he can get a Meyle seal. If not, I'll see if fastlane carries Meyle.

You should have the trim inserted in the seal/window assembly before you install it. If you are not doing that, that may be your problem.
I have installed 1 Meyle windshield seal and 2 Meyle rear window seals without incident on W123s. I have never used an OEM, so I can't tell you if they are THAT much better, but IMO they are all going to need some additional sealer anyway, so who cares? The Meyle seal I got for my W116 windshield was horribly big- completely unusable- maybe 4" too big. The APA seal I replaced it with was also too big, but close enough to work. The Meyle seal for the rear window on the W116 was just fine. That's all I know. As always, YMMV Rick
