The amount of Landcruiser HJ47/45s running around with broken speedos (having clipped at 1m km) is LARGE. I know no-one needs persuading about 616's though
I agree about the Hino diesels. I have the 4cyl Hino 3B diesel engine in my BJ60 LandCruiser (they commonly show up with 400,000-500,000 kms on the used market, often more). Based on TLC discussion forums, the 3B may be longer-lived than the 6 cyl 2H. The 616 is a great engine too (as in my 82 240D). Talk about non-builtin-obsolescence!

1939 farmall diesel 4 cylinder 230 cu inch engine. works fine today, 68 years later. in 68 years, I doubt many mb's, GM's, ford(ugh), or cummins will be running. The 4 cylinder engine has 4 main bearings with a diameter 2x that of a modern diesel. The cranks are incredibly strong, as is the rest of the engine.

heck, look at my sig... a POS chevy astro van with a v6 small block 4.3 gasser has exceeded 450Kmiles!!! and I did all maintenance on the motor. that motor has gone through 3 starters, 7 waterpumps, an amazing 5 power steering pumps, 6 transmissions, and 17 rear differentials, and nearly 20 door handles... but I can go outside and start it up right now.
+1

Actually, I think most American engines are pretty good. Look at the 4.0L inline 6 that all those old Jeeps got. That engine is indestructible. However, the rest of the car will fall apart .
