Car runs better randomly -- why?
I've got a puzzling one for you guys here. My car, '83 240D with 218k miles, started running a lot better lately.
It's always idled so rough that it shakes the entire car, spluttered a bit when starting up, and been generally loud. This entire last week, it's been smoother, quieter while moving, less shakey while stopped/idling, and has had no trouble starting at all. I haven't done anything. Did I just get lucky? Is winter fuel better than summer fuel? (In FL, is there winter fuel?) Does the cold weather we've been having make diesel engines perform better? I'm pretty curious.

I doubt there's winter fuel in Florida, there's not even winter fuel in Denver.
Could be that an air leak in the fuel supply is randomly sealing.

It's just the calm before the storm...
Just kidding. I hope your ride continues to improve with no effort on your part. How long have you had it? Maybe it is running better/getting cleaned out internally from the regular driving you are giving it. Just a random guess...

I like the "air leak randomly sealing" option, there were always air bubbles in my inline filter before.

Thats all it is I bet, these cars LIKE to be driven adn the PS might be cleaning stuff out. If you ran Diesel Purge directly into the engine, it might make a dramatic difference. OR , take the long road and simply continue to add a bit of snake oil to each tank.
BTW, I find, imho of course, the PS products to be inferior. I might recommend Howes " Meaner Cleaner", which you can find at Flyin' J's and truck places. The PS cetane boost has alcohol in it, so there I prefer the Stanadyne. |
