Support the wheel on it's periphery and leave the motor hanging beneath.

Hit the motor shaft with a large drift that is just smaller than the diameter of the motor shaft (just slips into the blower pilot hole).
I've done that several times without any problem. Just support the plastic part and tap with a hammer, it doesn't take much force.

Wow, mine came off with very little trouble. I don't know what else to suggest without risking damage.

brushes

i replaced the brushes without needing to remove the squirrel cage; is the reason you want to remove the squirrel cage to replace the bearings?

i used brushes from **************.com--spendy, tho. elsewhere here is referenced buying some from an electrical shop and grinding down:

good luck with that cage!

Hey nscarr, can you explain how you got at the brushes? I had my motor out a couple weeks ago to take a look at it, and I couldn't see how to get anything apart on the motor to get at the brushes.

bending tabs

Hi Chet--

(Just saw the question...)

Yes, it's only somewhat available for service--not my preferred design.

Bend the tabs around the back plate of the motor, there are six or eight or something. I used a light hammer and some chisels, trying to maintain the tabs for re-use; it was more annoying than difficult. Back plate can then be carefully pried off. I was only about 88% successful in reusing the tabs, some i had just chiseled off during removal, but so far, so good...

good luck,
-noah

Thanks... I have a bunch of little projects for this Friday, and this might now be one of them.
