Question w126 door closes hard...

I just got a 1984 300sd last weekend, and an trying to get it into shape. I noticed that it takes a large amount of force to get the drivers door to latch, and was wondering if there is some kind of adjustment on it to make shutting the door less forceful?

Thanks
-Joey

It should not take force to shut the door on the car.

What shape is the front door check strap in? Are the hinges, the striker plate, etc all lubed up with the correct grease?

The inside driver's door handles do give out on these sometimes, and they are unpleasant to have to replace.....

Congrats on the car and welcome aboard.........

I will have to wait till tomorrow to be able to check that, but I should go into more detail. Its hard to get the second latch to latch ie (door is shut without much force, but is still 1cm or so from being totally shut.

My 380 SE had that problem. I lubed the latch in the door and it now closes like it should with little force.

look at the metal sockets on the frame of the car. notice the plastic ramp sticking out. when that ramp wears out, the latch no longer "grabs" the door, and it popps back out.
good luck finding replacement ramps, the dealer sells only the entire socket.

Slamming the door is not good, in time something will break.
I had the problem on my 300D, lubed the latch with some grease using an acid brush. made it close much easier, but still the problem would come back every once in a while.
I replaced the striker plate and now closes with little effort, like new. the plastic piece in the under side of the plate was broken.

I have had my door panel off a few times, and was surprised to find the metal was actually cracked from all the slamming before I bought the car. had to bolt a plate on the back side for a brace.

The B and C pillar latch is the same for front and rear. They are unique for the left and right. There is a certain amount of interchanability between chassis, but you have look....

Go grab a rear one off a wreck and you'll be good for years.

They have shims under them, so watch when you remove.

Anyone willing to part with 4 extra ramps? I have a collection of parts for a trade. Please PM me if maybe we can work something out.

Thank You
-Joey
