1982 240d transmission
Hi there. I'm brand new to this forum, but have been watching for a while. Great place for valuable info. My question is... what automatic transmission is compatible with my 82 240d? Will an automatic from a 300(sd, d, etc.) bolt up? I have the manual set up complete with all the hardware, and have read many a post on the advantages of this application. I just don't know where to start. Would it be easier to drop the old auto, and replace it with another? Thanks in advance.

I have an excellent automatic tranny from a 74 240d. I am not sure if it will work in your car or not. I will sell it cheaply.

Why not install the manual?

I was planning on doing just that. I pulled an engine/tranny from a "pull you part". I got everything needed to do the swap, but am still unsure if it is the right choice. I plan to sell the car when I'm done. It has 115k original miles and is in awesome shape! I'm not sure what people think of a vehicle that is not "completely original". Any thoughts? By the way, thanks for the input.

In my not so humble opinion, an automatic 240D is going to be boring, slow (worse than the manual ones), unresponsive, and generally no fun. I'm not sure why they ever sold 240D's with the automatic, but I would never want one.

If it's in really nice shape, I would keep it original with the correct auto tranny. Worrying about 240D performance is a little silly. I wouldn't hack a manual tranny into one just to make it a tiny bit quicker. You will still have the slowest car on the road, just by a slightly smaller margin.

It isn't so much about the hard numbers as the fact that a manual transmission requires much more involvement from the driver and improves the perception of performance as well as making the vehicle more fun in general to operate. For the record, I hate automatic transmissions and only buy vehicles that have them because those models weren't made with manuals.

Not a travesty, just kind of silly.

I agree if I was going to keep it, but he is selling it after tranny replacement. Under those circumstances, I would just bolt up a matching automatic.

I think "silly" would be one of those "welded together, chain" steering wheels, not making a nice car into a better car

I do like manual trannies in sports cars, putting one in a 3500 pound/70 HP sedan is a bit pointless.

Well if you ever get up to the nortwest corner, I'll let you drive a nice manual 240D, which isn't exactly a sports car but its kinda fun to drive on the roads we have around here.

I'm sure the manual is more fun to drive than the auto, but a 240D just wouldn't be the car I would use for that project.

It is not at all pointless. It is a fun car to drive in a relaxing soothing type of way. It is hard to verbalize, but it can create a smile while driving.....
