The pads: Take a punch and punch out the two retaining pins on the caliper, remove the anti-rattle clip, use a screwdriver to pry back one pad, swap that pad, pry back the other, swap that pad, install the anti-rattle clip, hammer in the two pins and you are done.

The rotor: use the screwdriver to compress the pistons into the caliper, remove the two bolts holding the caliper in place, remove the caliper, slide off rotor and revers for installation. Be sure to use some loctite on the caliper bolts.

I just replaced the rear brake pads and rotors on my 84 CD and did exactly what ForcedInduction listed, I also added Brake Anti Squeal Paste.

Good Luck!

you may need a file or hacksaw blade to clean gunk off the edges of the caliper where the pads edges slide... mine were all gunked up and I could not fit the pads in.

Brake job--Real world vs Chilton Manual

Hi all,

I am having some problems replacing the brakes on my 1982 240D, and would welcome some advice from those of you that have done it.

I read the pad replacement procedure in the Chilton manual, and bought the replacement pads for my front brakes. I had been told that they needed to be replaced by the guy I bought the car from.

I was able to follow the procedure for removal, but couldn't figure out how to get the new, thicker pad into the slot vacated by the old thin one. The manual said to depress the cylinder, but nothing I did was able to move anything in the slot.

First question--how do I make the space big enough to get the new pad in?

I then discovered that it was the rear brakes that needed replacement, far more than the front. In fact, one of the rotors is heavily scored and needs to be replaced.

Second question--I see from the manual that replacing FRONT rotors is somewhat involved--removal of bearings, etc. Is that also true of the rear rotors, or are they easier to remove/replace?

Third question--I can guess that removing the calipers will also give me problems, due to my lack of experience and the sketchy procedure in the manual. Can anyone send me some tips or advice on any of this?

Fourth question--what supplies should I have available when I do this work? I see from the old threads that I need Locktite. Anything else?

Thank you very much in advance!

okay no the rear rotors are super easy just loosen the back 2 bolts and take off the caliper and the rotor comes off no problem. now the pads being a tight fit take a C-clamp and one of the old pads place the old pad onto the inside of the brake caliper the place the C-clamp onto the pad and tighten this should give you enough clearence for the new pad. enjoy and good luck
