best way to run a VIN #

Like most of us I have some idea of how to subscribe to some services for running a VIN #.
But I haven't done it before and I wonder if some services are better than others. What's best. The vin I need to run is WDB126201A063323.

Subscribe to Carfax or one of the other checking services.

Requesting checks here is not allowed.

What happened? I've seen it plenty of times. Did someone complain?

What me? !! breaking rules?

While I may be guilty of stretching rules now and then I wouldn't want to actually break rules. I understand that our host mustn't condone such things. I am not actually asking someone to run the number although if someone did I wouldn't get mad at them. No, what I was asking was, are there different services, and what's best? Are there others besides Carfax? etcetc

I've used Carfax a few times, and was not impressed with the data I got back. Maybe the lives of the vehicles I checked were uneventful, but I would have liked to see more data.

I guess that is part of the inspiration for the question. Do you get it all? is it reliable? are there other better services?

regardless of which service you use, that VIN is a digit short so none of them will work.

Here is a link to an interesting discussion on CarFax on the Grass Roots Motorsports Magazine Forum. It started out as "Is it legal/proper" to get someone to run one for you and ended as a discussion on whether the CarFax info was accurate and of any real use. Someone who claimed to work at CarFax participated in the discussion.

Does it matter that the car was sold originally in Japan? Same number of digits?
The number the seller has provided is WDB126201A063323 I will e back and ask him to recheck the number.
I believe I have seen this is the past where a potential buyer was being furnished with just most of the number. Do you think this is a sign of a scam? Maybe the seller wants to look like he is cooperating but doesn't actually want a buyer to be able to run the numbers?
I haven't ever been hurt with online inspired purchases; but from what I have read here I am much more nervous!

Carfax and similar services have their merits. I think their data can be useful. However, IMHO, it is just a tool that one should use carefully and should be combined with kicking the tires, inspections, etc. Carfax can be especially good if trying to check out a vehicle from a distance or another State where its impractical to drive there and kick the tires yourself. I think it would be one method of screening potential problems.

$35 (for unlimited one month) is a drop in the bucket if it saves me major expenditures due to lack of research.

my 2 cents.

I think you are probably right. And I am a province and about 700 miles (almost all mountain driving from the car which will be fun if the car is all it is supposed to be and if I get it). I am pursuing the correct serial number now.

I don't think carfax reports are worth what they charge, unless when they're free. Information like that should be provided for free by the government. All that information pertinent to vin #'s is stored in government data bases which all us support with our taxes.
