210 shifter slop?

This may just be me being picky but when the shifter is in R or N, it wiggles fore and aft about 3/4". Any other position and it's solid. Is there a bushing or something that can be adjusted? I've also noticed that when I wiggle the shifter in R, the reverse lights will go on and off.

Thanks!

there are two bushings on the actual shifter linkage, theu usually fail and cause the same type slop as you describe

click buy parts and look under trans. Site down right now, but are only a few bucks each. I've had one "in stock" for a long time.

Need a 3y/o, or a 12" pair of needle nose pliers to get to them. Not much room between trans and trans tunnel.

Thanks. Are the bushings installed from the top side of the shifter or from under the car?

Are you sure about that Terry, the shifter is an electronic unit after all. I believe the mechanical linkage is for the brake pedal but am happy to be corrected.

From my memory of things the bottom of the gear shift lever is heavily sprung.

It's an electronic trans and while the shifter has electrical aspects to it, when shifted to R or D it is connected to mechanical linkage below.

The shifter bushing is #27 on the diagram. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=210225&M=606%2E962&GA=722%2E608&CT=GA&cat=23V&SID=27&SGR=095&SGN=09

I have never done this on W210, but I have done it on a W123 and it was ornery.

Well I never. I'd always presumed that linkage was for the brake pedal

OK, I just rolled up under the car and I now see that the bushing located where the shifter is attached to the control rod is completely missing. I reckon it disentegrated from exhaust heat. This may also be the source of the annoying rattle/vibration I've been hearing from down there somewhere.

The other end seems to be fairly secure but I'll probably replace it as well for good measure.

So, are both bushings the same ones shown in the diagram as part number 27?

Thanks again!

Not positive but I thnik 89 in this detail may be the 2nd one.

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=210225&M=606%2E962&GA=722%2E608&CT=F&cat=45Q&SID=26&SGR=100&SGN=02

How's that for moving parts POD?

The electronic shifter came out in 00 or 01 I think. You may have gotten them earlier in the UK though.

Fixed this tonight. Took about 5 min and a screwdriver - much easier than I thought. Now the shifter is much less wiggly!
