Rear hatch strut replacment

I just purchased an '82 300TD Wagon that needs strut replacement on the rear hatch. Is it a PITA to replace? Any tips? Thanks in advance.

IIRC its pretty straight forward. Just rremove the pin on the hatch side of the strut and 2 10mm? bolts on the car side. You will need a helper or a broom handle to hold it up.

Many thanks for your advice. Safety will be foremost. Yeah, that hatch is heavy. Cheers!

tripple Square on the turbo models, NOT torks!!!
and the hatch end is just held in with a pin, and a clip. no ratchet is required.
also, there are holes in the headliner, so removal of the liner is not required, of course, if heat is used, it's a good idea to get the headliner out of THAT way...

I changed mine on my 85 300TDT Euro, I needed a triple square, I had to track down the local Mac tool guy to get one. At first it seemed like the tool would not fit in the hole and I thought I got the wrong bit but it just needed a few hits from a hammer to seat it.
